The oceans are at the heart of our changing climate, with a vast capacity to store heat. Almost all of the excess heat trapped by human emissions of greenhouse gases has been absorbed by the ocean (93%). Just 7% has been taken up elsewhere: by warming the air and land, and by melting ice.
